Forged in Fire

A slice of life non fiction by Ishika Kadam

A Story About Fire

Fire has always had two meanings.
It destroys.
And it forges.
The same force that melts steel also strengthens it.
The same heat that threatens to consume can transform.

A Story About Fire

Fire has always had two meanings.
It destroys.
And it forges.
The same force that melts steel also strengthens it.
The same heat that threatens to consume can transform.

This book explores that contradiction.
Not through grand lessons or neat conclusions but through real moments. Hospital visits. Cricket matches. Missed calls. Small victories. Suppressed fear. Unexpected laughter. Because resilience is not built in a single act of bravery. It is built one ordinary day at a time.

There is a version of this story where everything falls apart. This is not that version

Forged in Fire is not a book about illness. It is a book about what happens to ordinary people when life hands them something unexpected and they choose, quietly and stubbornly, to keep going anyway.

Forged in Fire moves through hospital corridors and late night phone calls, through the terror of a single word and the strange intimacy that illness forces upon a family. It explores the guilt of distance, the weight of watching, and the psychology of endurance, not as abstract ideas, but as a living, breathing experience. This is not a retrospective account written from the other side of grief. It is a story told in motion, from inside the fire.

It is the decision to move forward despite it."

At its heart, this is a book about being human.

The circumstances are specific.
But the emotions are universal.

Ishika Kadam

Ishika Kadam is a writer and data scientist based in Bengaluru, originally from Mumbai. A graduate of BITS Pilani, she has spent much of her life balancing two seemingly different worlds: one built on logic and numbers, and the other on stories and emotion.
Her love for language began early. At the age of ten, she won her first international spelling bee, an experience that sparked a fascination with words that would stay with her for years to come. What began as school essays and writing competitions gradually evolved into blogs, reflections, and personal narratives that grew alongside her.
While many writers are drawn to fiction and fantasy, Ishika has always been captivated by something else: emotion. She believes that words possess a unique ability to reach people in ways no other medium can. A sentence can comfort, challenge, heal, or stay with someone long after the page has been turned.
Forged in Fire is her debut book.

Personal Note from the Author

I never planned to write this book.
For most of my life, writing was simply how I made sense of the world. It began with school essays and stories, grew into blogs and reflections, and became the place I returned to whenever life felt too complicated to understand all at once. When my father was diagnosed with cancer, words became something more. They became an anchor.

Writing helped me navigate fear, uncertainty, hope, and everything in between. It helped me discover that even in life’s hardest moments, there is still room for laughter, love, resilience, and grace.
What began as scattered thoughts slowly became these pages. Forged In Fire was born from that journey. Not because the story is over, but because some stories deserve to be told while they are still unfolding.
My hope is that these words find you the way words found me when I needed them most. Because once a story is shared, the moment you see yourself in a memory, a conversation, or a feeling within these pages, it stops being only my story.
It becomes yours too.

Some stories are written with ink. Some are written with time.
This one is still being forged in fire.
